"Derrida"

Last night I watched "Derrida." I am not sure if any of you have seen it--it is not a biography or anything like that; just basically following him around and listening to him being deep.

Although I am still not all that familiar with Derrida's work he strikes me as a guy who truly enjoys the following three things: being opaque, seeming mysterious and himself. The third characteristic is hardly unique to Jacky, but the first two I know he has been widely criticized for. What are your thoughts on this?

yeah, i don't think you are that far off. I generally respect Derrida as a great intellect and an important philosopher. But I do think he is intentionally obtuse and pretentious at times. Or was. Or however you are supposed to use tense of a person who is dead.

Where I disagree with Searle, Quine and others is that they don't think Derrida is coherent or important. They are quick to dismiss him because if they take him seriously they have to seriously rethink their projects...like a certain Rorty, for example.
